This is very good writing, but it hurts to read. Which means it's very, very good writing, and spot-on with the (I was going to write "my people") characters.
Nice touch with the Omnian Inquisition, just where a little levity and relief were needed.
Oh, and you might try reading Pratchett. I'd recommend that you start with the Watch books, if you plan to take me up on it. That'll at least get you acquainted with most of the bunch I'm borrowing. ;-)
